What is a venous skin ulcer? |
| |

|
|
Venous Ulceration - This is the final physical sign of cutaneous malnutrition.
Can occur with or without visible varicose veins!
Venous ulcers look like shallow holes and can vary in size, color and depth.
Develop on either side of the lower leg, above the ankle and below the calf, when slow circulation in damaged veins causes fluid to seep out of the overfilled veins into surrounding tissues. |

ARTERIAL LEG ULCERS |
| |
Arterial leg ulcers are caused by arterial insufficiency, which leads to ulceration of the skin.
They are frequently painful, particularly when elevated and at night. The patient gets out of bed and walks about in order to obtain relief. Other symptoms include: coldness, numbness and burning.
Stages:
I - The skin is dry, scaly, thin and cool. The color is pale, cyanosed or blotchy.
II - The hair on the lower leg and toes is sparse or absent.
III - Toenails are thickened and require less cutting.
VI - Ulcers are well defined, punched out, deep. They occur primarily on the shin, heell, dorsum of the foot or toes, which are quite different sites from those of a venous ulcer.
V - There are absent or diminished pulses. The final stage of severe ischemia is gangrene. The toes are usually affected first.
